Five potential candidates to replace John Sheridan at Carlisle United

John Sheridan has resigned as manager of Carlisle United, as confirmed by their official club website yesterday. Here are five potential candidates to replace him-

Gary Bowyer- He is the early frontrunner for the job and has been available since leaving his position as manager of Blackpool in August. The former Blackburn Rovers manager guided the Seasiders to promotion to League One in 2017 and kept them up last season.

Paul Murray- Him and Tommy Wright have been placed in temporary charge and could be considered for the job if he does well. He joined the Cumbrians as first-team coach in June, having previously worked at the likes of Oldham Athletic, Hartlepool United, Barrow and Fleetwood Town.

Paul Hurst- The 44-year-old is looking to get back into management after he was sacked by Ipswich Town in October. He has also managed Boston United, Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town in the past. Would he drop into League Two?

John Askey- He guided Macclesfield Town to the National League title last season which earned him a move to Shrewsbury over the summer. However, it didn’t work out for him at New Meadow and he was dismissed in November. Askey is another option for Carlisle.

Jim Bentley, Morecambe- He is the current longest serving manager in the Football League having been in charge of Carlisle’s fourth tier rivals Morecambe since 2011. The 42-year-old has consistently performed well during his lengthy tenure and would be a shrewd appointment by Carlisle. However, it will be hard to persuade him to leave his beloved Shrimps.
