Town Still Top After Tuesday Games
Tuesday, 22nd Oct 2019 22:03

Town remain top of League One following Tuesday evening’s fixtures but now only on goal difference from Wycombe Wanderers, although with two games in hand. The Blues face Rotherham at Portman Road on Wednesday.

The Chairboys, whose goal difference is five worse than the Blues’, drew 1-1 at Blackpool, while third-placed Peterborough and Fleetwood in fourth are in action tomorrow against Accrington at home and at Coventry respectively. Fifth-placed Oxford don’t have a midweek game.

Saturday’s opponents Southend United, who confirmed Sol Campbell as their new boss and ex-Blues defender Hermann Hreidarsson as his assistant coach earlier today, had a disastrous night.

The 23rd-placed Shrimpers were thrashed 7-1 by Doncaster Rovers, who are sixth, at Roots Hall having been reduced to nine men.

Ethan Hamilton was shown a straight red card for a high challenge in only the sixth minute, then Stephen McLaughlin followed him into the dressing room on 53. Both players will miss the Blues’ visit to Roots Hall on Saturday.

Elsewhere, former Town striker Daryl Murphy netted his first goal for Bolton as the bottom-of-the-table Trotters won 2-0 at Bristol Rovers, their first victory of the season, while Sunderland beat Tranmere Rovers 5-0 at home.

In some ways I wish we'd been knocked off top spot. I think the lads need that bit of extra motivation to bounce back with a win, rather than knowing we'll still be top even if we lose. Yes we had injuries on Sunday and the team selection was questionable - but we can't get complacent at the top.

Southend really did have a bad night Phil, started with 12 players and still lost 7 - 1!!

Yep, we really need to step up a gear. Slumberland are waking up, Peterbro' are smacking in goals, Wycombe look very steady, and several others are hovering, waiting for us to slip up. COYB! Let's respond!

Yes Steve, need a positive response and I'm sure it'll come tonight. Also remember Town coming in for a bit of criticism for 2-2 draw away at Posh. I felt it was a good point, now looking increasingly so. Despite their thrashing at the hands of Doncaster I'm a little concerned about our trip to Southend. New manager and after a heavy defeat, could be dangerous? If nothing else they'll probably be "enthusiastic" and kick lumps out of us!!

Our win at Fleetwood is looking pretty damn good too.

I'm not looking forward to Saturday evening when we almost inevitably lose to Southend though!
